Positive Mindset for Positive Parenting in Distance Learning

We cannot deny the fact that distance learning bears a lot of unexpectations. From students' point of view, problems occur when they get bored of online meetings, when they're more interested in playing games, and (for these reasons) in their inability to grasp all the materials discussed as well as submitting all assignments in a timely manner. From parents' side, problems come out when they work and therefore unable to monitor their children's learning, or they have more than one child to support at the same time. Then, from teachers' perspective, problems appear when they're unable to address these occurrences and not ready with strategies to deal with them, not to mention the challenge to create communicative and interactive activities to provide students with meaningful and impactful learning.

All these occurrences lead to unfavorable feelings and will possibly end up with negative thoughts. Distance learning has run for more than 1 semester and is still running until a time that is unpredictable. If we keep thinking the negative thoughts, we will not go anywhere and there will be no change in the learning process. We need to move on to a state which is more positive.

To address this challenge, the school I'm working for organized a webinar taking the topic "positive mind, positive vibes, positive life" and invited Ibu Roslina Verauli as the speaker with zoom at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2020. It is hoped that after joining the webinar, parents will get some insights about coping those occurrences with more positive responses.

Ibu Roslina emphasized that parents need to avoid stress by breaking down a problem, and then find plausible solutions for it. To make it happen first they need to switch their mindset. Instead of cursing the situation, they'd better communicate with children to find the root by discussing what they feel about online learning and what they expect in this condition. She insists that we should always use positive words to avoid stress in themselves. In conclusion, in this pandemic, we need to break down all problems and then communicate them with the children with positive words and tone. In other words, parents and teachers need to be more positive in coping with unexpectations to make everyone stay happy.
